Leah currently serves as the Primary School Associate Principal at Washington International School (WIS), where she leads the preschool through first grades. She has worked at WIS for more than a decade, first as a second grade teacher and later in a series of leadership roles. Leah built a strong foundation as an educator with ten years in the classroom, primarily in Maryland.
Leah is also a leader in innovative methodologies for academic curriculum and faculty development. Her experience with integrated design thinking and inquiry-based interdisciplinary programs, coupled with her natural ability to lead and mentor faculty as well as collaborate with parents, establish her as an exceptional next Head of School for Harbor.
Leah earned a B.A. in Anthropology from Wake Forest University. She holds a Master of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in elementary education and a Graduate Certificate in School Administration and Supervision from Johns Hopkins University. Leah and her husband, Bill, are the parents of two children, Emily (4) and Jude (1).
Leah will take over as Head of School from Ms. Andrea Zuraf, who has ably led the school through this transition. Andrea will return to her role as Harbor’s Assistant Head of School and Director of Admissions. We are profoundly grateful to Andrea for her leadership this year and are confident that she and Leah will make an exceptional team to steward Harbor into its next exciting phase of growth. We will celebrate Andrea’s contributions later this spring and will also host events to welcome Leah to our community.
I would like to extend my profound gratitude to our Search Committee, ably led by Chair Eileen Pennington. Committee members included: current trustees Tolu Lawrence, Josh Lipton, and Eric Posner; faculty members Seth Fangboner and Caroline Kiernan; current parent Rebecca Ong; and past parent and trustee Hillary Davidson. Their efforts required an enormous commitment of time and responsibility, and I am deeply grateful for their service. The Search Committee is also grateful for the work and guidance of our Head of School search consultant, Dr. Jane Snider. I also would like to express gratitude and appreciation for our families, faculty, staff, and other community members who were so engaged throughout this process, which was a critical part of the search effort. Your robust involvement and thoughtful feedback are a testament to the strength of Harbor’s community and dedication to our school’s mission.
Please join me in welcoming Leah to The Harbor School! Leah’s compelling commitment to inquiry-based early childhood education and her deep understanding of the value of the independent school system are inspiring. We cannot imagine a better choice to lead The Harbor School into the future.
