As I reflect on our Back to School Night, I am filled with gratitude.
It was such a joy to gather together as a Harbor community and have the opportunity to connect with so many of you. The evening offered a beautiful glimpse into the relationships that are beginning to take shape this year. Families were getting to know teachers, teachers were sharing their hopes for the year, and all of us were coming together around what matters most, our children.
For me, one of the most meaningful parts of the evening was simply being together.
As a new Head of School, I am especially grateful for these opportunities to get to know our families. I want to hear your stories, learn more about your children, understand what brought you to Harbor, and hear your hopes for their years here.
Because building relationships with families is at the heart of building a strong school community.
You know your child in ways that no one else does. You know what makes them laugh, what comforts them, what sparks their curiosity, and what helps them feel confident. Our teachers are getting to know those same children in a new environment, discovering how they learn, connect, communicate, and grow.
When we bring those perspectives together, something powerful happens:
We see the whole child more clearly.
The relationships between teachers and children are foundational, but the relationships between school and family are equally important. A conversation at drop off. A question after school. A classroom visit. A family gathering. A shared celebration. These moments build trust and help us become partners in your child's journey.
And when the adults in a child's life feel connected, children feel that connection too.
This year, I hope we continue creating many opportunities for families to come together, get to know one another, and experience the joy of being part of Harbor. Some moments will be about learning. Some will simply be about gathering. All of them help create a community where children know:
I am known.
I am supported.
I belong.
From our youngest two year olds to our third graders stepping into leadership, our children are growing within a community of teachers, families, and friends who know them and care about them.
That is something worth celebrating.
Know the child. Know the family. Build the relationship. Grow the community.
I am grateful to be beginning this journey with all of you and look forward to the many conversations, gatherings, and shared experiences ahead.
Warm regards,
Colleen Brown
