USED BOOK SALE! – SO MUCH MORE THAN A FUNDRAISER
April 10, 2025

Dear Harbor Families,

Despite the cold weather, spring has sprung! We have so many wonderful community events planned for the coming months, so get ready to see us at Harbor often (and check out the dates listed above to mark your calendar)!

I am personally very excited about a new HSFA event, our Used Book Fair, which dovetails with so many of our goals, beliefs, and curriculum at Harbor! During the week of April 21st, we’ll be selling used children’s books from your home libraries, to support the school! It’s an opportunity to do some spring cleaning and go through your child’s bookshelves, with the knowledge that the special books that you enjoyed as a family - that your child might be growing out of - will go to a good home and will be loved again! Not coincidentally, we have scheduled this event for the week of Earth Day, which is fitting given that we will be teaching students the importance of reusing resources.

This month, our third graders are working on their unit of Environmental Sustainability, which is beautifully aligned with the goals of the Used Book Fair. Furthermore, second graders are embarking on their unit called Marketplace, where they will be exploring goods and services, production of goods, and other economic concepts. Therefore, in true Harbor fashion, our second and third grade students will be applying their learning in authentic ways by selling the used books to their peers in other grades (and may have a few other handmade goods to sell as well). On Tuesday, April 22nd (Earth Day), we invite you to send in some cash with your child to school so they can shop the sale! (Books will range between $2-$4 each, so a ten or twenty will do.)

And the icing on the cake that week will be Friday morning’s Family Friday event, a Coffee and Connections conversation with DEI consultant Ashley Nartey, who has worked with our faculty and staff this school year and will be exploring the power of diverse books as windows and mirrors! We hope you will join us for one more opportunity to shop the sale and to engage in conversation with us. We’ll also have a special display of students' work and learning about jazz, curated by music teacher Ms. Wilson, on display in the Chesapeake Room!

Now, go ahead and tackle those bookshelves with your child—it’s the perfect time for a refresh!

Warmly,

Leah Musico
