Dear Harbor Families,
At its heart, teaching is the study of human development. It is deeply professional work that blends both art and science — where research, experience, intuition, and relationships come together to create meaningful learning experiences and caring classroom communities.
Excellent teachers develop a deep understanding of how children grow and learn. They draw upon research about the brain and child development while also relying on close observation, thoughtful assessment, and daily connection with students. They recognize each child’s strengths, identify areas for growth, and continually seek ways to nurture confidence, curiosity, resilience, and joy. Great teaching requires collaboration with colleagues and families, flexibility, creativity, and an unwavering belief in children and their potential.
Over the years, I’ve come to believe that truly exceptional teachers never feel fully “finished” with their work. There is always more to learn about a child, another way to personalize an experience, another opportunity to support growth, and another way to strengthen a classroom community. It is a profession filled with both tremendous responsibility and tremendous heart. Few roles ask more of a person, or offer greater opportunities to make a lasting difference.
Harbor teachers are extraordinary educators. They are researchers, storytellers, problem-solvers, nurturers, artists, collaborators, and advocates for children. They bring remarkable dedication, thoughtfulness, humor, and care to our school each and every day. On this Teacher Appreciation Week, I want to express my deepest gratitude to our faculty and staff — as a Head of School, a colleague, a Harbor parent, and someone who has the privilege of witnessing their work up close every day.
And what a wonderful week of appreciation it has been! Thank you to the HSFA and to all of you for the many thoughtful gestures, treats, notes, surprises, and expressions of kindness shared throughout the week. Our faculty and staff have truly felt celebrated and cared for, and your generosity and appreciation have meant so much. The connection and support within this community is something very special, and this week has been a beautiful reminder of that.
As we close out the week, I also hope you will join me tomorrow morning for our final Coffee and Connections session of the year as part of our Empathy in Parenting series. These conversations have been thoughtful, supportive, and meaningful, and I have appreciated the opportunity to connect with many of you through them.
Thank you again for all you have done to celebrate our teachers and staff this week — and for the partnership, trust, and care you show throughout the year.
With appreciation,
Leah Musico
Head of School
