A VERY HARBOR WEEK
February 14, 2020

Dear Harbor Families,

What a week! Though every week is full at Harbor, this one was particularly so!

Since our last newsletter a week ago, the community came together for the event of the year - Spiral Night - enjoyed a Georgetown Hoyas basketball game (They won! Go Hoyas!), celebrated the 100th day of school, and recognized Valentines Day with an in-class card exchange and a Valentines sale run by our very own first and second graders.

In true Harbor fashion, Spiral Night was a phenomenal representation of our students’ self-directed learning and exploration of the theme of Sports and Games. Among other projects, classroom displays featured a life-sized ping pong table, student-developed fairy tale themed board games, a mini-version of the Olympic village, and group and individual research projects about famous athletes and a diversity of sports. The evening was capped by a celebration in the gym hosted by our very own DJ Starfish - and a surprise appearance by our Harbor mascot - a human-sized version of our true mascot, Calvin the dog!

Just two days later, we were honored and grateful to enjoy a Georgetown Hoyas basketball game as a celebration of our Spiral theme. Over 100 members of our Harbor community cheered on the Hoyas in an exciting game against the DePaul Blue Demons. It was quite a game! We are incredibly grateful to Harbor parents Cheryl Weaver and Patrick Ewing for arranging such a special event for us.

And tomorrow, while students and families start their long weekend, our teachers will engage in professional learning in a workshop with our colleagues at the Treatment and Learning Centers. Three specialists with expertise in occupational therapy, speech and language, and clinical psychology will work with teachers on classroom strategies and approaches. In the afternoon, our K-2 teachers will work with our colleagues from KID Museum on maker-centered learning while our preschool and JK teachers spend time deepening practices in early childhood teaching and learning.

After all of that, I think a long weekend might be in order! We wish you a wonderful four day weekend = and thank you for the valuable time tomorrow for professional development.

See you next week!

Warm regards,

Leah Musico
